Chakras, meaning ‘Wheel’ in Sanskrit, are the main energy centers in your body. There are actually a great deal of chakras, but we focus on the main 7 that run along the spine.
Each chakra is a spinning wheel or disc of energy that when flowing freely helps balance and harmonise mind, body and soul.
When this flow of energy gets disrupted or blocked however, it can impact your wellbeing. In this post you will find out what are the 7 chakras, how they get blocked and how you can unblock your chakras.
Each chakra is associated with a different colour, function in your body and aspect of your life. Let’s take a closer look at these now.
The 7 Chakras
Root
The root chakra (or Muladhara) is located at the base of the spine and is associated with the colour red.
The root chakra represents your foundation in life and is responsible for your sense of security, stability and feeling grounded. It is connected to your survival instinct and sense of security.
When this chakra is blocked, you may feel anxious or fearful, and have problems with money or your career.
Sacral
The sacral chakra (or Svadhisthana) is located just below the belly button and is associated with the colour orange.
The sacral chakra represents your ability to feel pleasure, creativity and passion.
When this chakra is blocked, you may feel disconnected from your sexuality or creative power. You may also experience emotional instability or feel like you’re stuck in a rut.
Solar Plexus
The solar plexus chakra (or Manipura) is located just above the belly button and is associated with the colour yellow.
The solar plexus chakra represents your personal power and sense of self-worth. It’s responsible for confidence and self-esteem, as well as helping you feel in control of your life.
When this chakra is blocked, you may feel powerless or unworthy. You may also have digestive problems or trouble making decisions.
Heart
The heart chakra (or Anahata) is located near your heart in the center of the chest and is associated with the colour green.
The heart chakra represents your ability to love, be loved, and how you show compassion
When this chakra is blocked, you may have difficulty giving or receiving love. You may also experience anxiety, depression or physical heart problems.
Throat
The throat chakra (or Vishuddha) is located in the throat and is associated with the colour blue.
The throat chakra represents your ability to express yourself and communicate your truth.
When this chakra is blocked you may have trouble speaking up for yourself or feel like you’re not being heard. You may also experience thyroid problems or sore throats.
Third Eye
The third eye chakra (or Ajna) is located between the eyebrows and is associated with the colour indigo.
The third eye chakra represents your ability to see clearly (clairvoyant abilities) and access your intuition.
When this chakra is blocked, you may have trouble making decisions or trusting your intuition. You may also experience headaches, migraines or eye problems.
Crown
The crown chakra (or Sahasrara) is located at the top of the head and is associated with the colour violet.
The crown chakra represents your spiritual connection to ourselves, others and the universe. This chakra also plays a role in fulfilling your life’s purpose.
When this chakra is blocked, you may feel disconnected from your higher purpose. You may also experience physical problems like headaches, insomnia or chronic fatigue.
How To Unblock Your Chakras
Have you been having pain in your body, experiencing emotional, physical stress, feeling generally off, and lacking energy?
If you answered yes, your chakra system may well be out of balance.
If your chakras get blocked, you may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra that is either over or under active. There may be either too much energy flowing or too little.
When a chakra is out of balance (blocked or not spinning as it should) you will have difficulty expressing the particular qualities associated with that chakra and when overactive, the qualities of that chakra will be overly dominant.
There are many ways to unblock your chakras. Some methods include meditation, yoga, aromatherapy, crystals and Reiki.
Practice visualization
If you feel generally out of balance, start by visualizing yourself having a healing energy pouring through your body and traveling along your spine
Get out in nature
Go outside and connect with earth’s energy by spending time outside. Walk in your bare feet to receive Earths balancing energy. This is particularly great for balancing your root chakra.
Sound healing
Different sound frequencies and vibrations can help clear energy blockages and balance the Chakras.
Chakra balancing chant
Chants can help reinvigorate the energy flow in your body, it’s like sound healing from the inside as the vibration is sent through your body.
Use Crystals
You can balance any chakra using crystals with the same colour as the chakra you wish to re-balance, e.g. a blue coloured crystal like aquamarine, amazonite or lapis lazuli to unblock your throat chakra. Simply lie down and place the crystal on that chakra point.
Reiki
Practice self Reiki to balance the flow of energy throughout your body, or go to a trusted Reiki practitioner for a few sessions.
If you are having trouble with a specific chakra, you can focus on healing that particular energy center.
By unblocking your chakras, you will bring balance back into your body and mind, and you will feel more connected to yourself, your purpose, the world around you and to your highest self.
